Schools & Universities in Melton Mowbray

 

Melton Mowbray has two primary schools that accept children under the age of 4: Melton Mowbray Nursery School and Preschool, and Sherard Primary School. Melton Mowbray Nursery School partners with the Forest School programme to give preschool children the opportunity to explore their environment. At Sherard, pupils can enjoy the security of a single school to last from 2 years old to 11.

Two religious primary schools are available in the town – St Mary’s C Of E and St Francis Catholic Primary – while Brownlow, The Grove, and Swallowdale provide mainstream education for children up to the age of 11. All are excellent choices for the young ones, with a range of specialisations, clubs, and extracurricular activities to participate in.

Long Field Academy and John Ferneley College take on the majority of Melton’s secondary-school aged students. John Ferneley College specialises in business and enterprise courses, and teenagers can engage in a number of extracurricular activities including Kazoo Choir, Library Club, and an Art drop-in. Meanwhile, Long Field Academy is renowned for its enrichment activities, operating everything from field trips to awareness days.

Melton Mowbray is an excellent location for parents of children with SENDCo needs, as the area has its own Special School close to home. Birch Wood is located to the south east of the town and provides additional support for students between 4 and 19 years old.

The University of Leicester is a 40-minute drive away from Melton, and is renowned for its research programmes in astrophysics, medicine, and history. It’s an excellent place to study if you’re planning a career in research or the sciences.

 

Transport in Melton Mowbray

 

Melton Mowbray has its own train station in the town centre, located along the Birmingham New Street to Stansted Airport line. It takes just over 1 hour to reach Birmingham New Street by train from our new homes in Melton Mowbray, while closer destinations can be reached in 18 minutes (Leicester), 30 minutes (Stamford), and 40 minutes (Nuneaton).

The town has a robust network of buses for residents to take advantage of, operated by Arriva Midlands. Services pass through the town centre to get to Leicester, Loughborough, Grantham, and Bottsford, as well as schools such as the John Ferneley College. Most residential areas have their own bus stops, and neighbourhoods are connected to the town centre by ‘MC’ bus routes.

Melton Mowbray lies at the intersection between two major A-roads: the A607 and the A606. You can join either road from Leicester Street in the town centre, putting destinations such as Grantham, Oakham, Leicester, and Nottingham within easy reach. The closest motorway is the M1 running between Leeds and London.

 

Popular things to do in Melton Mowbray

 

There are plenty of things to do in Melton Mowbray, especially if you enjoy shopping for hidden gems. Several markets are hosted every week in the Stockyard sheds, a historic livestock market converted for more everyday shopping habits. A farmers market operates in the Stockyard on Tuesdays and Fridays, while Sunday brings a car boot sale into town.

Melton Mowbray is bordered by the Twinlakes Park, a popular child-friendly theme park located an 11-minute drive away from the town centre. The park advertises itself as ‘all weather’ and has a wide range of attractions for children, including waterslides, pedalo boats, and a roller skating rink.

The Stapleford Miniature Railway is a tourist attraction a 15-minute drive away from Melton. This mini-museum is only open on selected days, making it a rare trip to get the young ones excited about. Train rides are available across 2 miles of model track set in the lush countryside around Stapleford Park. You can also visit Melton Carnegie Museum for free if you’d like to learn more about the area’s rich history.

Outdoor enthusiasts can visit Melton Country Park and the John Frear Drive Hiking Area, both excellent starting points for exploring the local countryside. The Rutland Water Nature Reserve is a 25-minute drive away, as is Rutland Water itself; watersports, birdwatching, fishing, and beaches are all available around the reservoir.
