Things to do in the East Midlands
The East Midlands is known for its expansive forestry, with the region being used over the centuries as the hunting grounds of choice for royalty and nobility. Forests like Rockingham Forest and Sherwood Forest have captured the collective imaginations of Brits far and wide, with Sherwood Forest playing a key role in the Robin Hood mythology.
The region is also home to both the Peak District National Park and the Lincolnshire Wolds – two nationally recognised Areas of Outstanding Beauty – which feature some of the best walks in the East Midlands.
The waters of Rutland are also particularly well known amongst keen anglers and bird watchers due to the area’s exceptional biodiversity.
There are a number of water parks in the East Midlands including one at the Centre Parcs in New Ollerton, one at Rutland Water Park and another at the Butlins situated right next to Skegness and the Lincolnshire Coast.
Both spots make for great family days out in the East Midlands and the kids will absolutely love them!
Other popular, family friendly attractions in the East Midlands include the Pinnacle Climbing Centre in Northampton, the Retro Computer Museum in Leicester and the Catanger Llamas Trekking Centre in Towcester.
Schools & universities in the East Midlands
Alongside a number of excellent primary and secondary schools, there are also 18 further education colleges and nine universities in the East Midlands.
Among the most prominent of the universities in the East Midlands are the University of Nottingham, which has been consistently ranked amongst the best in the UK, and Nottingham Trent University. The region is also home to Loughborough University – one of the preeminent sporting universities in the UK – boasting British gold medallists like Paula Radcliffe amongst its star-studded alumni,. It is also known for being where the British Olympics Athletics team trained during the 2012 Olympics and where the design for the official 2010 World Cup football was conceptualised.
Other notable universities in the East Midlands include the likes of De Montfort University, the University of Northampton, the University of Leicester, the University of Lincoln, the University of Derby, and Bishop Grosseteste University.
Public transport in the East Midlands
From the East Midlands, commuters can catch direct train services to three of London’s major stations – namely London St Pancras, London Euston and London King’s Cross – making for a short and easy commute to the capital. Additionally, there are a number of direct services to the likes of Chesterfield, Derby, East Midlands Parkway, Kettering, Leicester and Retford.
Nottingham also has its own fully operational tram service, helping commuters get around the town easily.
Asides from its excellent train services, the East Midlands is also home to one of the UK’s international airports, with many affordable airllines making East Midlands Airport their official hub, offering direct flights to great destinations around Europe and beyond!
