Rugby schoolchildren keep safe with hi-vis bags

Pupils at a Rugby primary school will be shining brightly on the streets this month thanks to a local housebuilder.

Davidsons Homes has donated 50 high-visibility bags to students at St Gabriel’s Church of England Academy, close to where it is building.

The donation, which has been made to mark Walk to School Month, will help to ensure the children can be seen more easily on the roads while making their way to school.

Established by UK charity Living Streets, Walk to School Month is an annual nationwide campaign aimed at encouraging pupils to travel sustainably by foot, while also reducing congestion and pollution.

Andrew Taylor, Headteacher at St Gabriel’s Church of England Primary Academy, said: “We are so pleased that many of our children are able to walk to school, helping them stay fit and active whilst benefitting our environment. These bags will help to ensure that they are safe and easily seen as they walk.”

Davidsons Homes is currently building new houses at its Houlton development, under a mile away from the school.

Simon Tyler, Sales Director for Davidsons Homes South Midlands, said: “As the darker mornings and evenings draw in, we felt it was important to donate these hi-vis bags and help keep the local pupils safe on their journey to and from school.

“Walk to School Month is an extremely important initiative that not only encourages children to be more active, but also benefits the environment by allowing parents to leave their cars at home when doing the school run. It is a campaign that we have supported for a long time and we are always keen to help raise awareness by reaching out to local schools close to where we’re building.

“It has been a pleasure working with St Gabriel’s Church of England Academy on this project, and we hope that the children enjoy sporting their brand-new hi-vis bags.”
